Why lead?

Why is leading important to you?

• Are you looking for a concrete measurement of progress - e.g. being promoted?
• You want to influence business decisions?
• You want to influence the technical direction?
• You want to help other grow in their careers?
• How much of it is a matter of status?
• How much a combination of the above?

There is not one single path for your growth. One cool thing about the tech industry is that there is a lot of flexibility to mix, match, and move across different tracks of development.

Workshop

1. Chat with two leaders that you admire. Ask them what is their motivation for leading and how they came to that conclusion. You can chat with Managers or non-Managers at your work, ping people on Twitter, or look up the answers in online interviews of leaders you admire
2. Write down two or three sentences about why you want to lead
